The Urban Soyal Foundation is the nonprofit branch of the original Urban Soyal dispensary, founded in Richmond, California, by advocates committed to the medicinal, cultural, and environmental integrity of cannabis.
We were created to address the social and ecological harm caused by over-commercialization in the cannabis industry. Our goal is to restore balance through education, advocacy, and sustainable practices that honor both people and the planet.
Dr. Ayoka Nurse — Founder, Researcher, and Social Policy Analyst
Dr. Nurse brings over two decades of experience in public service, equity research, and cannabis policy. Her leadership centers on community healing, environmental justice, and ensuring that cannabis is used as a tool for wellness, not exploitation.

Our Urban Cannabis Waste Compliance and Sustainability Toolkit helps cities, operators, and community partners manage cannabis waste responsibly. The project promotes circular-economy models and environmental resilience in urban areas.
We advocate for a shift away from profit-driven recreational models toward compassionate, community-centered cannabis policy. Our focus is on equity, accessibility, and healing—not exploitation.
In partnership with environmental scientists, we’ve applied for funding from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to assess and reduce cannabis cultivation’s impact on local ecosystems and water sources.
We offer community classes, workshops, and collaborations with medical professionals to increase awareness of cannabis as a therapeutic tool—especially for seniors, veterans, and those managing chronic pain, appetite, or sleep issues.
